At the start of the war the 2nd Rifle Brigade battalion were in India but they soon returned to England where they joined 25 Brigade of 8th Division. The division landed in France on 6th November, 1914 and on 17th November 2nd Rifle Brigade moved into the trenches for the first time when they took over the front line at Chapigny near Laventie. There followed a period of three days in the trenches and then three days in billets at Laventie. One of their periods in the front line here started on 30th November, the day on which Harold Whitaker was killed. According to the battalion diary he was ‘walking out beyond the wire’, when he was fired on and did not return. Two parties went out but failed to find his body. |
